Impressions of the EU-Indonesia Business Dialogue Conference 2010 in Jakarta, Indonesia

Why EIBD?

BILATERAL PERSPECTIVE

The EU-Indonesia Business Dialogue (EIBD) is an annual core forum of business leaders and government representatives working consistently on emerging opportunities in trade and investment. The on-going work on sectoral and cross-sectoral aspects is the basis for the EIBD Conference. This is uniquely coupled to a more formal government-to-government dialogue, enabling business leaders to directly impact on governments’ policies.

EIBD is supported by the Indonesian Ministry of Trade and the European Union. Organizers are the National Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) and the European Business Chambers in Indonesia.

OPPORTUNITIES FOR EUROPEAN BUSINESS LEADERS

  • Indonesia is by far the biggest economy in Southeast Asia - four times bigger than the Philippines, three times bigger than Malaysia and twice as big as Thailand.
  • Indonesia’s economy continued to grow during the global economic crisis and could record more than 7 percent annual growth in the coming years.
  • Indonesia is not only rich in raw materials but offers a growing domestic market for industrial and consumer goods with 240 million consumers and an increasingly wealthy middle class of some 35 million

OPPORTUNITIES FOR INDONESIAN BUSINESS LEADERS

  • The European Union is the world's largest developed single market, with 500 million consumers. It is a source of new investments for Indonesia, with the potential to bring in technology, innovations and expertise.
  • The range of products, technologies and services traded between both regions is highly complementary.
  • Europe is keen to work with Indonesia as a partner in a new and positive international climate change alliance.

ACTIVE PROGRAM

Being witnessed by Chairman of KADIN Indonesia, Mr. Suryo Bambang Sulisto and the EU Ambassador for Indonesia and Brunei Darussalam, H.E. Julian Wilson, the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) officially commenced the ACTIVE cooperation. The signing ceremony took place on February 2 during KADIN Indonesia’s International Business Reception at JW Marriott Hotel.

The abbreviation of ‘ACTIVE’ stands for ‘Advancing Indonesia's Civil Society in Trade and Investment’. This program is co-financed by European Union to support the activities of selected Civil Society Organizations for the next three years to come.

The signing of the MoU has marked the start of cooperation between KADIN Indonesia (Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry) and the five European Business Chambers. Key beneficiaries of the selected Civil Society Organizations are eight Indonesian sector associations as follows;

  • Pharmaceutical sector is represented by Association of Herbs and Traditional Pharmaceutical Products (GP Jamu) and Indonesian Pharmaceutical Association (GP Farmasi Indonesia),
  • Automotive sector is represented by Indonesian Automotive Parts & Components Industry Association (GIAMM) and Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (GAIKINDO),
  • Food and beverage is being represented by Indonesian Food & Beverages Producers Association (GAPMMI) and Indonesian Fishery Products Processing & Marketing Association (AP5I) , and
  • Indonesian Textile Association (API) and Indonesian Footwear Association (APRISINDO) are the representatives for textile and footwear sectors.

To make ACTIVE program smooth in its execution, KADIN Indonesia partnered with five European Chamber of Commerce namely British Chamber (BritCham), German-Indonesian Chamber of Industry and Commerce  (EKONID), Indonesia French Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IFCCI) and Indonesian-Benelux Chamber of Commerce  (INA) as well as European Business Chamber of Commerce in Indonesia (EuroCham).

This program is form of a continuation of the business-driven EU-Indonesia Business Dialogue (EIBD) which started in 2009. The EIBD is an ongoing B2B forum that identifies untapped potentials for growth in trade and investment. It works on joint opportunities and uncovers bottlenecks. The ACTIVE program itself aims at (1) strengthening the trade and investment relations between Indonesia and the European Union and to improve the business climate in Indonesia; and (2) strengthening the capacities of Indonesia business associations.

While in absolute figures the bilateral business relations are developing well, the relative importance of Europe as a trade and investment partner of Indonesia is decreasing – and vice versa. Companies on both sides are facing challenges of market access and meeting standards; plus there is a general lack of awareness of opportunities, not at least in the currently critical period Europe is going through. The ACTIVE program enables the Chambers to engage in an intensive sector-based and cross-sectoral dialogue with associations representing four Indonesian key business sectors. The outputs will feed into government-to-government discussions, not at least during the negotiations of a so-called Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) which are expected to start in mid-2012.

Background information:

“Advancing Indonesia’s Civil Society in Trade and Investment” (ACTIVE) is an initiative by the European Union to support sustainable economic development in Indonesia. ACTIVE supports capacity strengthening of Civil Society Organizations in policy advocacy, research and dissemination of information, and in improving services to their members.
